Best Type of Roofing for Your Project?

The best roofing type for any property depends on various factors, including architectural style, climate, budget, and specific requirements.

Nova Roofing Halifax takes pride in guiding clients to make informed decisions, ensuring the longevity and beauty of their roofs.

A classic and widely favored choice, asphalt shingles are renowned for their cost-effectiveness, ease of installation, and variety in design. Made primarily from organic materials or fiberglass, these shingles come in an array of colors and styles to match any home's aesthetic. Asphalt shingles offer a reliable barrier against the elements, with many modern variants designed to resist algae growth, UV damage, and wind uplift. Their adaptability and affordability make them a popular choice for many homeowners, and with proper installation and maintenance, they can last for decades.

Pros:

Cost-Effective: Typically less expensive than other roofing materials.

Variety: Comes in a wide range of colors and styles to match different architectural designs.

Ease of Installation: Relatively quick and straightforward to install.

Adaptability: Suitable for various roof shapes and sizes.

Repairability: Damaged shingles can be easily replaced without disturbing the entire roof.

Cons:

Lifespan: Shorter lifespan compared to some other materials (typically 15-30 years).

Environmental Concern: Not as eco-friendly due to petroleum content and shorter lifespan.

Heat Absorption: Can absorb a lot of heat, which might affect home insulation.

Embodying a blend of tradition and timeless beauty, wooden shingles and shakes offer an organic and rustic appeal that ages gracefully over time. Typically crafted from cedar, redwood, or pine, these roofing materials are naturally resistant to insects and moisture. Shakes, being hand-split, have a rougher texture, while shingles present a smoother, milled finish. Both provide excellent insulation, keeping homes cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Their natural aesthetic complements a wide range of architectural styles, from historic to contemporary.

Pros:

Natural Aesthetics: Offers a rustic and organic appeal.

Insulation: Provides natural insulation, helping with energy savings.

Biodegradable: Environmentally friendly when it's time to replace.

Variety: Available in various wood types, each with its unique appearance.

Cons:

Maintenance: Requires more maintenance to prevent moss, mold, and rot.

Fire Risk: Unless treated, they can be a fire hazard.

Cost: Generally more expensive than asphalt shingles.

Lifespan: In areas with high humidity or rainfall, their lifespan can be reduced.

For those seeking a touch of luxury and longevity, slate roofing stands unmatched. Formed from natural stone, slate tiles offer an elegant, sophisticated appearance that can enhance any property's value. Beyond its visual appeal, slate is remarkably durable, fire-resistant, and environmentally friendly. With its natural ability to repel water and resist temperature fluctuations, slate roofs can last for a century or more with minimal maintenance.

Pros:

Longevity: Can last a century or more.

Appearance: Offers a luxurious and elegant aesthetic.

Fire Resistant: Natural stone is fireproof.

Eco-Friendly: Long lifespan and natural material reduce environmental impact.

Cons:

Weight: Very heavy, requiring a strong support structure.

Cost: One of the most expensive roofing materials.

Installation: Requires specialized skills and can be time-consuming.

Fragility: Can be broken if walked upon or during heavy storms.

Modern, sleek, and incredibly resilient, metal roofing has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. Available in materials like aluminum, steel, copper, or zinc, metal roofs offer a high strength-to-weight ratio, making them lightweight yet sturdy. They excel in reflecting sunlight, leading to significant energy savings during warmer months. Metal roofs are also resistant to fire, mildew, insects, and rot. With a multitude of styles, from traditional panels to shingles mimicking clay or wood, metal roofing offers both form and function for contemporary homes.

Pros:

Durability: Resistant to rot, insects, and mildew.

Reflectivity: Reflects sunlight, leading to energy savings.

Lifespan: Can last 40-70 years or more, depending on the material.

Safety: Fire-resistant and can handle severe weather conditions.

Eco-Friendly: Often made of recycled material and is itself recyclable.

Cons:

Cost: Initial installation can be expensive.

Noise: Rain and hail can be noisy on a metal roof.

Denting: Some metal roofs can be susceptible to denting.

Expansion & Contraction: Metal can expand and contract with temperature changes, potentially affecting fasteners.

(For Commercial Buildings)

Often used for flat or low-sloped commercial roofs, single-ply roofing systems like TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin), EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), and PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) are valued for their durability and watertight features. These membranes are lightweight, energy-efficient, and can handle the rigors of commercial environments. They resist UV radiation, punctures, and chemical exposure, ensuring long-term protection for commercial establishments.

Pros:

Lightweight: Doesn't add much weight to the building's structure.

Efficient Installation: Can be installed quickly, especially on large commercial roofs.

Durability: Resistant to UV radiation, punctures, and chemicals.

Waterproof: Offers excellent water resistance, especially for flat roofs.

Cons:

Aesthetics: Might not be as visually appealing as other roofing types.

Foot Traffic: Some single-ply membranes can be punctured by foot traffic or sharp objects.

Seam Vulnerability: Seams might become weak points if not properly sealed or welded.

Lifespan: Depending on the type and maintenance, lifespan can be shorter than some traditional materials.

The Different Types of Residential Roofs

Gable roofs are the most common type of roofs in areas with temperate and cold climates. They are known for their triangular shape slope design on both the roof's right and left side. The left and right side meet at the top to form a roof ridge. This design is only possible because of roof trusses.  A Gable roof can be made from various materials ranging from metal, concrete tiles, asphalt shingles, and cedar shakes. If you live in a snowy region and would like to have this roof installed, we recommend installing it at an angle of at least 40 degrees.

Apart from being suitable for use in cold and temperate regions, gable roofs also have other benefits.

Pros

They quickly shed snow and water

More room is created in the attic

Easy to build and maintain

Affordable to build

Has an average lifespan of 40 years

Cons

Too much overhang can result in winds blowing the roof off

Limited design capabilities

A Skillion roof is also known as a shed roof. This is a single roof that is attached to a taller wall giving it a sloping finish. This slope is best for people who prefer a minimalistic design. Also, they are preferred as a home addition when you build a shed or porch. A Skillion roof has several benefits when compared to other types of roofs. These are:

Pros

Easy to assemble and install

Use fewer materials when compared to Gable roofs

The design makes it easy for snow and water to run off

Can be used for aesthetic appeal

They last longer when compared to horizontally shaped roofs

Cons

Not suitable for use in windy areas

Does not provide a lot of attic space

The gradient is too steep

It is worth mentioning that Skillion can be made more eco-friendly if it incorporates solar roofing. If this sounds good, give us a call, and we will provide you with a free quote!

A hip roof is a roof that slopes on four sides with the slopes meeting at the top to form a ridge.  A hip is an area where different roofs meet. The main advantage of a hip roof is that it is best used in windy and snowy regions. This is because the roof design makes it impossible for snow to stay in place as it will easily slides off.

The main difference between a gable and a Hip roof is that a Gable only has two vertical sides that slope downwards.

Pros

Best for use in windy and snowy areas

More durable and study than Gable roofs

Can accommodate extra living space in the artic

Cons

Require more building materials because of its intricate design

More expansive than Gable roofs

It uses more seams hence easily leaks if not well fixed

The two most common types of Hip roofs available are Simple Hip and Cross Hip. When installing a cross hipped roof, ensure that proper roofing is done or the valley will let water in.

A flat roof is a roof that may appear as if it does not have a pitch. However, it has a raised slope to prevent water from stagnating on top. This type of roof is preferred in commercial and industrial buildings and they can be installed in areas that experience high rainfall.

Flat roofs are preferred for industrial and residential use, especially if the property owner is trying to create an outdoor space on the roof.

Pros

Creates additional space for outdoor activities

Its easier to install cooling units

Cons

It is more susceptible to leaks due to its low pitches

Not suitable for use in snowy areas

Not ideal for use in areas with high rainfall

A butterfly roof has a V-shaped design because it incorporates two roof pieces angled outside while sloping and meeting at the center to create a valley. The end product is a butterfly-like roof.

Pros

The design accommodates larger windows that allow more natural light to penetrate through

Suitable for drought-prone areas as the roof collects more water

Easily accommodates solar roofing

Cons

It is expensive to set up

Higher maintenance costs when compared to Gable or flat roofs

Bigger windows make it harder to control the air temperature in a house

Secondly, you might want to have a roof inspection done because it is part of your annual property maintenance schedule. Whatever the reason, a roof inspection will save you money.

As a roof inspector, we use our roof checklist to know whether it is in good condition or not.

The list below is an exterior house checklist and contains the following:

  • Identification of broken, split, or sever shingles
  • Identification of shingles with broken seals
  • Inspection of gutters and Eaves

The Interior house checklist involves the team looking for any signs of trouble within your house. We will inspect your home for the following:
